The Catcher in the Rye

When leaving the school, the lady tells good luck to Holden which reminds him of how old spencer said the same thing to him when he left Pencey. He thought about calling Jane but he wasn't sure if she was off school so he decided to go to the museum and wait for phoebe. While waiting he meets these two kids who start asking to him about mummies. Holden shows them the mummy exhibit and gives them some facts about mummies and the two kids leave eventually leaving Holden all alone. He thought it was nice and peaceful until he sees that someone has written f you on the wall. He gets really upset at this and thinks its horrible because little kids will not know what it means and they will find out and it's not good for them to know and how there is no such thing as a nice peaceful place because someone will write f you. He goes to the bathroom and passes out but feels better after he does and is lucky because he landed on his side inside of cracking his skull on the floor. He starts thinking about how he's never going to see his family again until he's 35 and how no one will do phony things in his cabin but they're allowed to visit. He sees phoebe carrying a suitcase and she says she wants to go with him but he gets mad at her an says no and he tells her to shut up. She starts crying. He tries to talk to her but she is mad and doesn't talk to him. However they go to zoo and walk around and go on a carousel like they used to when they were small. She isn't mad at him anymore and he tells her that he is going to go home and not leave anymore. He watches her ride the carousel and even though its raining very hard and he is soaked he feels happy. He ends the story in the mental facility and how he went home, got sick, is going to a another school next fall and how the psychoanalyst keeps asking him if he's going to apply himself. Holden thinks this is a stupid question because he won't know until he does it. His brother D.B. visits him with some British girl who is going to be in one of his movies and asks him a few questions. Holden regrets telling so many people about this because he misses everyone he talked about and ends the book with this piece of advice "Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody."
I liked this book because I found it very interesting to hear Holden's opinions and views on so many topics. He had some very interesting things to say and I quite enjoyed reading them. I like the piece of advice at the end because it holds some truth. When you constantly repeat a story to multiple people, it forces you to reminisce on the past events and makes you miss them and the people.
My reading was excellent because I was able to complete the book.

9:40-10
The Catcher in the Rye

He leaves and it's beginning to show signs of morning. He goes to the station and finds his bags and decides to sleep on the benches but he only gets to sleep until 9 because the place starts to fill up. He starts feeling depressed again and begins to thin of Mr. Antolini and how maybe it was a misunderstanding and is grateful for the advice and everything he's done for him. Holden isn't feeling to well and finds a magazine and begins to read it. However, it's a health magazine and he's worrying about his hormones and how he might have cancer. He leaves to get some breakfast but is having difficulties swallowing so he just drinks a coffee and starts walking. He sees all these Christmassy things and remembers times when he took Phoebe out around this time a couple years ago. However, he starts feeling very anxious and is worried about crossing the street and is sweating a lot. He starts pretending to talk to his brother and asks him to make sure he crosses the street safely and when he does he thanks him. He then decides he's never going home again and he's going to go to the west by hitching but he's going to give Phoebe her money first and say goodbye. He makes up a whole future where he would pretend to be deaf and mute and fill people's cars with gas and oil and build a house outside a forest and marry a deaf mute girl so he wouldn't have to talk to anyone. He wants to say bye to Phoebe so he goes to a store and buys a pencil and paper and writes a letter to Phoebe. He goes to her school to deliver it and he remembers when he used to go there. In the letter he tells her to meet him at a museum close to the school when she gets out for lunch. He lies to the receptionist about the message in the letter but she believes him and delivers it. He continues to have a conversation with her for a little bit.
I think there's something wrong with Holden and he needs to seek medical treatment. I think he hasn't gotten over Allie's death and he should talk to a therapist or some professional about it. I also believe this to be the root cause of his failures, constant drinking, talking to himself and other things.
I read well but I started to think about how many people are affected by this and how he should do something about this.

6:30-7

Holden goes to Mr. Antolini's place and sees his wife and remembers how they used to come for dinner at his house and play tennis together. He likes these people because they're intellectuals and witty. They start talking about how Holden failed everything except English but he failed oral expression which is a speeches class. Because he's not feeling good, he doesn't want to get into it but he does anyway. He recalls how they're suppose to stick to the topic in the class and if they start to digress the class tells digression. He remembers on guy in particular would talk about interesting things but it wasn't about the initial topic and everyone would tell digression. This bothered him because he doesn't care if the person digresses its just nice to see them exciting and talking about something interesting. Mr. Antolini gives him some advice telling him there's a time and place for everything and they continue their conversation over coffee and cake. Holden doesn't feel too well and is very sleepy but stays awake anyway out of respect. Mr. Antolini is clearly inebriated but continues to drink more. He reveals to Holden that he had lunch with his dad who has received the letter and how his dad is concerned about him. He also puts his two cents in about Holden's problems and Holden says he doesn't hate anyone he just gets them for a while and gives examples of ackley and stradlater. He thinks Holden is giving up before he actually gets started and gives more opinions and advice. Holden yawns and goes to sleep on the couch where they prepared it with linens and such. Because he doesn't have any pyjamas he sleeps in his shorts. He is woken up by a hand touching his head. It's Mr. Antolini and Holden freaks out because this kind of stuff has happened to him before and puts his clothes back on and says he has to go get his bags at the train station and leaves Mr. Antolini's home.
What shocked me was what happened to Holden at Mr. Antolini's house. Also, if this has happened to him before a lot of stuff is starting to make sense. However, if he knew this kind of thing happens to him all the time why would he take a chance and stay there.
My reading was alright today but I started thinking about how what happened to Holden must happen to lots of kids.

He called Mr. Antolini and quickly told him (he was scared his parents would walk in) about how he got kicked out and stuff and Mr. Antolini told him he could come over. He remembers Mr. Antolini because he carried James castle's body to the infirmary even if he got bloody and recalls him as the best teacher he ever had. He goes back into the room sees Pheobe turning on the radio and dancin to music. He says he taught her and she is actually very good. Pheobe tells Holden how she can trick the thermometer but is interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Holden quickly turns out the light and hides in the closet. The mom goes inside the room and starts talking to Pheobe asking her about her day and dinner and asks if she's been smoking and Pheobe covers for Holden by saying she lit a cigarette. The mom doesn't seem too happy and complains of a headache which she often gets and leaves. Holden decides he needs to leave now but asks Pheobe for some money because he has barely any left. She gives him her christmas money and he starts crying uncontrollable and isn't able to stop for a while. When he finally stops, he gives her his hunting cap, tells her he will be at Mr. Antolini's place and that he will call her if he can and promises to be at her play. He takes his leave out the window and no one sees him.
I think the money symbolizes that Holden has failed and needs to seek financial aid from his little sister. It shocked me that he cried and asked her for money but he was desperate.
My reading was good today but I was a little shocked that the mother believed that Pheobe smoked a cigarette.

Holden comes back in the room and Pheobe starts freaking out again saying that their dad is going to kill Holden. He tells her to relax because their dad won't kill him but get a little mad and send him to a military school. But Holden says he's going to go to Colorado to work on this ranch. Pheobe says he can't even ride a horse and she starts asking him if he failed every subject and why he got expelled again. He says she has a stupid haircut and tells her that he passed English. But he gets a little agitated when she asks him him he did it again. However, he starts telling all the things he hates about Pencey. He tells her it's all full of phonies and gives her an example of students, teachers and alumni and how it all depressed him and he didn't like what was happening. Pheobe says that he doesn't like anything that's happening and when he objected she made him name one thing. He wasn't able to concentrate too well and kept thinking about the two nuns a basket and this guy James castle who borrowed a shirt from Holden, called a guy conceited and didn't take it back and the guy and his friends beat the kid up and James jumped out the window and landed on the steps and died. The guys who were in the room with him got expelled nothing else and Holden thinks they should have gone to jail. He answers her question by saying he likes Allie and sitting and talkin to her. Pheobe says he can't like Allie because he's dead and Holden gets a little upset and says just because a person is dead doesn't mean you can't like them anymore especially if they were ten times nicer than anyone alive. She tells him that sitting with her and talking isn't anything and asks what he wants to be. He says he wants a bunch of little kids with no adults except himself playing in a field of rye while he stands on the edge of a cliff and when the kids started running and getting to close to the edge, he would catch them. The poem by Robert burns "if a body meet a body coming through the rye" makes him think of this. Pheobe doesn't say anything to this except saying that dad will kill him. He goes to make a phone call to his English teacher Mr. Antolini.
It surprised me when Pheobe told Holden that he doesn't like anything. I thought it was good that she did that though because it was true and Holden needed to hear that. I also thought his dream of catching kids in the rye was a little bizarre but nice.
I read well today because a lot of questions I had were answered.

Holden gets to his apartment building and there's a new elevater guy who is stupid and Holden is thankful for this because he won't be recognized. He's not feeling drunk anymore and is able to sneak in. He goes into Phoebe's room but she is in D.B.'s room because its the biggest room and she likes it there so she stays there while he's in Hollywood. He says how she's very neat and organized and smart and well dressed for a kid and wakes her up. She immediately hugs him and starts talking about a play she's in, a movie she saw, how her parents went out, a boy who pushed her down the stairs and won't leave her alone and a bunch of things. Holden feels relived because he won't be caught since his parents aren't home and the maid is half deaf. He tells her how he bought her a record but it broke but she's going to save the pieces. He asks if D.B. is coming home for christmas but she's not sure. She figured out that Holden is home early because he got kicked out and she starts freaking out sayin that dad is going to kill him and stuff. He tries to calm her down but it doesn't work. After trying to coax her out from under her pillow, he decides to leave and get some cigarettes since he has run out.
I wish Holden would not get kicked out all the time. Also he should have told his parents or something because he blew a lot of money.
My reading today was successful because I'm almost done the book.

Holden gets really drunk at the bar where this girl is singing to a guy with wavy hair playing piano. He asks the waiter to give her a message but he thinks she will never get it because people never give your messages. He then walked over to a phone booth and called Sally. He realized he was drunk and after talking a bit she hung up. Holden then walked into the washroom and stuck his head in a sink full of cold water. With his hair soaking wet, Holden feels cold and goes over to sit on the radiator where it's warm because he's shivering. There, he meets the guy who was playing the piano. Holden strikes up a conversation with the guy while he combs his hair. The guy isn't very talkative and tells Holden to go home. He went to get his coat and hat and record and starts off towards the lagoon in Central Park to see if the ducks were there. On his way there, he drops the record and it shatters. He looks around and almost falls into the lagoon but he stops and sits on a bench. He starts thinking that he will get pneumonia and starts picturing his funeral. He remembers his brother allie's funeral and gives some opinions on funerals and what not. He only has $3 and is going to go home and attempt to break in to see his sister.
The most interesting idea in what I've read is Holden's opinion on funerals and how it's a waste and pointless to give flowers to the tombstone of the person. I agree with this. Although some people think its nice and respectful it really is a waste. You should respect and visit the person while they are alive and not wait until after they die to show how much you respect them. It's just for show and is a waste.
I read well because this chapter was very interesting and touched some deep subjects despite Holden's inebriated state.
