Water for Elephants
Pages: 130-141
He wants to kiss Marlena but doesn't and they go to find August who is clearly choked. Uncle al spent $2000 on the elephant and hired people but didn't but any sleeping cars so there will be 64 working men sleeping under wagons on the flats and Jacob thinks this is stupid and suggests that the bunk cars get filled with whoever needs a bunk. August says you can't do this because you can't mix workers with performers and uses Jacob and kinko as an example. They all drink their whiskey and it hit Jacob kinda strong. Everyone else is partying and drinking crazy things and Jacob has one heck of a night but can only remember bits and pieces. Jacob wakes up in a clown tent with his face painted and only wearing a dress and he's in a trunk and kinko tells him August is looking for him. Jacob looses the will to work but kinko motivated him. August is trying to get the elephant into the cage but he has no luck and continues to hit the elephant until he gives Jacob a try because Pete asked him about feeding the cats. Jacob tries to be nice to her but she still doesn't move. August comes back and tells Jacob to go find Marlena and make sure she doesn't go behind the tent. Jacob goes to look behind the tent and sees Pete slitting the throats of horses. He goes to find Marlena and sees her in her room watching August brutally hit Rosie the elephant and she holds his hand and tries not to cry and Rosie runs into her cage.
The main conflict is that there is not enough room for everyone. I think they should put the performers all together and put them more condensed so there will be equal space for everyone. Also, August needs to relax and stop abusing the animals. This book is really showing the dark side to the circus.
I read well because I completed another chapter.
