Water for Elephants
Pages: 210-219
Marlena wakes up Jacob and he scrambles out the door before she can see Camel. She has Queenie and Walter is so happy to see her. Apparently she was on the side of the train and August picked her up because Marlena told him to. Camel starts thinking that maybe August does have a heart after all but Walter says no and calls August a racist name and Jacob gets really mad but Walter says he doesn't hate August because he's Jewish, he hates him because he's crazy and Camel and Jacob agree. Uncle al is very mad because someone has stolen the lemonade and uncle al said he would dock the pay of the working men. To replace the lemonade they make another batch by filtering water from the animal troughs with a pair of hose and put pieces of plastic lemon slices in the jug. However, the lemonade goes missing again the next stop, they mix up some more in the same way but this time uncle al takes two quarters from each of the men. Before the show, uncle al rushes into Marlena's dressing tent and she is upset about this but he doesn't care. He tells at August saying it was the elephant who stole the lemonade and August gets the hook and goes to hit the elephant. Marlena tries to stop him and so does Jacob but he stops when she starts to cry and he comforts her. Back to the present Jacob was telling rosemary about Rosie the elephant and other things he cannot remember and he is very distraught and upset that he is beginning to loose his mind. He thought it was beginning because he can't always remember the people who come and visit him and he's not sure who they are. But in his defence there are his grand kids and great grand kids he doesn't remember too well and they always come at different times and sometimes it will be months before he sees them again.
I like how Jacob stands up for people and how he says that everyone picks on each other. I don't understand either. People nowadays are always making fun of other people and taking cheap shots and it isn't right but there's not many people like Jacob who will stand up and get mad like that.
I read not so well because it was in class.
