The Catcher in the Rye

After the prostitute left, Holden felt very alone and depressed and started talking to his brother Allie which is something he does when he's depressed. He remembers when he told his brother to go home because he wanted to play BB guns with his friend not little brother and he feels bad about it. As he's going to bed he starts thinking about religion and gives his views on the disciples and Jesus and other biblical figures. He expresses his angst towards ministers and how they and their voices are phony and that's why he doesn't like going to church. Then, the elevator guy Maurice and the prostitute sunny come to get more money claiming the price was $10 even though Maurice said it was $5. After multiple refusals and some insults, Holden gets punched in the stomach and sung takes a $5 bill out of his wallets and the two leave. After a while of sitting in the bathroom he decides he needs to do something and calls his friend Sally to go see a matinee. He thinks about how his dad is rich, and his mother is nervous after allie's death and how he feels bad about telling her he got suspended. He does down to grand central station where he meets some nuns and strikes up a conversation with them after helping them with their bags. He gives them a donation and then they leave to go on their train.
The main character is full of angst. He's always talking about how he hates something or dislikes something or how that makes a person "phony" or stupid. He's also very opinionated but keeps them to himself. He also is very friendly and strikes up a conversation with just about everyone he meets.
My reading was successful today because I was able to get through two very detailed and eventful chapters.

11:40-12
The Catcher in the Rye

Holden takes a cab to go to the night club Earnie's and asks the cab driver about where the ducks go after the lake has frozen over. The can driver is very touchy and responds quite angrily at the question so Holden refrains from further conversation out of fear that the cab driver will drive the cab into a pole or something. The nightclub is crowded with college and Ivy League school kids and other people he thinks are jerks. He runs into a friend of his brother's who he's not too happy to have run into and decides to leave so that he doesn't have to talk with her anymore. He walks the whole way back to the hotel feeling depressed and reflects on himself and how he doesn't like fist fights or to hit people and stuff. When he gets on the elevater a guy there talks him into getting a prostitute. Holden agrees and starts thinking about virginity and sex and stuff but when the prostitute comes he doesn't want to do it anymore but still pays her for coming.
I found the following quote "I'm always saying 'Glad to've met you' to somebody I'm not at all glad I met. If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff though" incredibly true. Throughout the book Holden does this a lot and I've had to do that too many times as well. Also the quote "people are always ruining things for you" is also true. In the book, whenever Holden is having fun or something, someone else comes and says or does something and the happy moment is gone.
I read well today because I was focused on the book and I was able to concentrate.

Holden thinks about his sister and reminisces a little then decide to go to the hotel's club. There he tries to get some liquor but to no avail. He meets three 30 year old women and starts talking and dancing with them. He also buys them some drinks and attempts to strike up an intelligent conversation with them but it was no use and the women leave because they have to get up early in the morning to go see a show at the Radio City Music Hall. He leaves shortly after they do an he brings thinking of Jane and remembers time he spent with her. He decides to go take a cab to a nigh club called Ernie's where his brother D.B. used to go to and take him.
One thing that keeps coming up is Holden's family. He's always talking about how smart his little brother Allie and sister Phoebe are and how nice his brother D.B. is. He also mentions how his mother is psyic and always knows its him when he calls. However, I would ask why he never talks about his father.
My reading was good today. I started thinking about how much my little sister is like Holden's little sister.

Holden has boarded the train and is heading for New York. While on the empty train, a middle aged woman sits next to him although there are many empty seats. Turns out this woman has a son who goes to Pencey. Holden lies about his name and tells the woman that her son is a good guy even though Holden hates her son. As time goes on he begins to feel bad about lying because he realizes that this guys mom is actually a very nice and genuine person. After the train gets to the station, he gets off and goes to a phone booth because he wants to call someone. However, due to one reason or another, and because of the time he realizes that he can't call anyone and decides to get a cab to take him to a hotel. He gets to the hotel after shortly conversing with the cab driver. The hotel is full of some very peculiar people and Holden reflects on them and other ideas of his. He calls this college girl to go out for cocktails but she declines.
The main character is constantly telling lies and making up stories and stuff to about everyone he meets. I think this is going to catch up with him sooner or later and he will have a hard time getting out an explaining all this to everyone.
My reading was a little distracted today because I kept thinking of how stupid this guy is for lying constantly and making up the most rediculous stories. I don't understand why he does this but it is extremely frustrating.

Stradlater comes back and gives Holden his jacket back and asks about the composition. He reads it and is upset with Holden's work which bothers Holden. He begins to loose it and becomes enraged when he thinks of stradlater "giving the time" to his old neighbour and friend Jane and the two get into a fight which ends with stradlater knocking Holden to the ground. Holden decides to leave Pencey that night because he feels lonely and so he packs his things and heads for the train station where he will take a train to New York and stay in a cheap hotel until his parents recieve the letter regarding his expulsion.
One thing that has come up repeatedly is the main character leaving. He always leaves when he doesn't like something. For example, when he was in ackley's room, he left after not wanting to listen to what ackley had to say. Later, he leaves Pencey earlier than he has to. He usually leaves when he feels lonely or sad.
My reading today was good because I was able to finish a chapter and focus on the book.

Holden doesn't have anything special to do tonight and does strange things when he's bored or feels like horsing around. He talks about ackley who lives in the room next to his and how much he doesn't like him but he feels sorry for him. And his roommate stradlater who was a senior. His roommate asks him to write a composition for him while he goes out with a girl. Holden goes out with his friend mal and invites ackley to come too. He writes the composition and reminisces about his little brother who died of lukemia.
What shocked me most is how much this guy lets people use him. He complains about almost everyone doesn't like very many people yet he usually gives into their demands. For example, he let stradlater use his coat and did his composition.
I read pretty well because I like the book so far and it's interesting.

I finished Gulliver's Travels. It was a very good book and I liked it a lot but the ending was a little disappointing and I didn't look it too much but over all it was good.
