The Catcher in the Rye
Pages: 142-149
Holden describes the wicker bar and remembers how there were French singers, a lousy bartender and the place was always packed with phonies. He then starts talking about Luce and how he was really smart and would always talk about obscene things to him and the other students at Whooton. Luce shows up and orders a dry martini and Holden starts asking a bunch of personal questions some of which Luce answers reluctantly. They order some more drinks and Holden gets a little too personal with the questions and Luce gets sore. Just before Luce leaves, him and Holden talk about going to a psychoanalyst. Luce's father is one of those and Luce says that his dad never psychoanalyzed him but he helped him to better himself. Before Luce leaves Holden asks him to stay because he feels extremely lonely but Luce says he has to go because he's late.
The main character's main problem is that he's really upset and lonely. He's conflicted about going home because he doesn't want to disappoint his mother. Also, he can't hang out with anyone because most people are either still in school or he can't get a hold of them or he finds them annoying.
My reading today was excellent because I was able to get through another chapter in the book.
