The Catcher in the Rye
Pages: 135-141
After leaving the skating rink, he was hungry and went to get some food. He starts thinking about Jane again and remembers how she was dating a terrible guy and when he asked her about it she said he "had an inferiority complex." Holden gives some opinions on this by saying even if they do have an inferiority complex they're still a terrible guy. Also he says that girls are unpredictable in their thoughts and gives an example of his room mate and some girl. He thinks that if a girl likes a guy, she will like him even if he's a bad person but if she doesn't like him, she'll say he's conceited no matter how nice and good he is. Jane's phone didn't answer so he hung up. He only has 3 names in his phone book: Jane, his teacher from school and his dad's office. He decides to try to call a guy he went to school with who was very smart and had a high I.Q. The guy answered and said he could go out at 10. To kill time, Holden decides to go to the movies and reminisces about going there as a kid and he starts thinking about how his brother was in the army but he would never be able to do that himself because he wouldn't want to be stuck with a bunch of idiots.
What surprised me most was Holden's level of angry towards war. He would volunteer to sit on top of an atomic bomb so that he doesn't have to stay with all the people in the army for years. He would rather get shot and taken or something than have to stay in the army for a long time.
My reading today was alright but I started thinking about how different things were back then. And even though the situations were different the problems were still the same.
